For those of you who have watched the FOX 5 NYC News piece on either www.youtube.com or our website, www.thesuperallergycookbook.com, you realize that we have been home schooling our children for some time. What most people don't know is that we started home schooling before Anne was even born for academic reasons. Our oldest son, Luke, was an early reader. By age 5 he could read The Reader's Digest! Our school district was not favorable to putting Luke in an appropriate academic setting and I didn't have the energy to fight the school on the issue. I was a stay-at-home mother at the time and so we began home schooling about 6 years ago. We opted to continue it for health reasons, but it didn't start out for health reasons.
It is a very personal decision to home school, and it is not one that most people take lightly. There is work involved, and yet it also has rewards. We do the California Achievement Test (CAT) each year and based on the scores that our children have received, we must be doing something right!! They are learning at grade level or above. Over the past six years we have gone from home schooling one child to home schooling three children. We have improved our structural system as time has gone on.
Last year, a dear friend, Linda Breitbach, corrected the majority of the boy's worksheets for school! And we could not have managed without her!! She does so much for us anyway!! So Linda helped us get through last year as we brought out the cookbook and did a lot of business tasks. This year I am pleased as punch to say that we are on top of correcting the worksheets without Linda's help. Our dear friend, Alberta Roman, made some contributions here as well. Alberta came up with promise sheets to go with the worksheets (not that she intended to, but I credit her with this invention). This now allows me to better manage outstanding school work items!
Love,
Lisa
